Richard Goldberg's practice includes both corporate work and litigation. He counsels small to mid-sized companies, especially technology and engineering companies, in corporate law and contract issues and negotiations, anti-corruption and Foreign Corrupt Practices Act compliance, lobbying compliance, and intellectual property matters. Mr. Goldberg also represents clients in litigation defense, including civil defense, white collar defense, internal investigations, and alleged corruption and fraud. In both capacities, Mr. Goldberg often negotiates on behalf of his clients with adversaries, potential business partners, contractors, vendors, and U.S. government agents and prosecutors.
Mr. Goldberg represents clients in connection with litigation and disputes of various types, including U.S. Department of Justice and Inspector General's Office investigations and prosecutions, commercial and civil suits, and internal corporate investigations into alleged fraud and corruption. In addition, he provides counsel concerning corporate anti-corruption policies, methods, and regulations, as well as contracting-related compliance and government disclosures.
Mr. Goldberg also counsels clients in various aspects of corporate law, including contract negotiations and disputes with agents, contractors, and vendors. Due to his background in enterprise software design, Mr. Goldberg's practice is weighted heavily in counseling technology and engineering companies, especially those specializing in software, data privacy, and information security.
Mr. Goldberg has represented a wide variety of individuals and corporations, including large and small software companies, small computer security consultancies, federal government appointees and civil service employees, corporate officers, oil-services companies, and non-profit entities.
He is also a frequent speaker and author on issues in managing litigation risk, contracting, privacy, data security, cloud computing, and other issues at the intersection of new technology and the law.
Education
Mr. Goldberg received his J.D. from Duke University Law School. At Duke, he co-founded the Duke Journal of Constitutional Law & Public Policy and served as its first Executive Editor. He received a B.A. cum laude from the University of Rochester with honors in philosophy.
Industry Experience
Prior to attending law school, Mr. Goldberg worked as a computer software architect, developing enterprise-level software systems at Booz Allen Hamilton, at two Internet startups, and at Science Applications International Corporation (SAIC). In that time, Mr. Goldberg worked for Fortune 500 clients as well as the Federal Communications Commission and the United States Army, Air Force, and Department of Defense.
Community and Personal Activities
Mr. Goldberg is active in the D.C. community, organizing and participating in fundraisers and community service projects for D.C. Cares, OneBrick, and Gifts for the Homeless. He is also an avid musician, distance runner, and cave diver.
